Frank - which version number, please? 2.0.0 -232.2MB, 2/21, 2008? This would be my 4th version. This gets ridiculous. The forum appears to be all questions and no answers, or the answers presume a certain level of expertise that I don't have. Thanks.

dvair Try this - Boot with the Windows 7 Install disk. When you get to the installing point select a custom install. When it shows you the partitions on the drive, select the advanced options and delete all partitons. then cancel the installation process and reboot with the DBAN and try the wipeout then. David Is a drive automatically partitioned? I certainly didn't partition it. Does this make you revise your post? In other post, I had downloaded FOUR different CD burners and TWO different version of DBAN. As of this post, I downloaded 5 CD burners and waiting on my 3rd version - when Frank answers.

nancy3 Is a drive automatically partitioned? I certainly didn't partition it. All pcs from Dell have a hidden recovery partition; it is hidden but very real. Acadia

Thanks, Acadia. So I should follow David's suggestion?

I think part of the problem is downloading so many burning programs. A standard installation of Windows 7 will create 2 partitons (not counting another one that may be on there from Dell) A System partiton of about 100 Megs that is Hidden and the Main partiton (rest of the drive) where Windows is installed to. What is the reason you want to DBAN this drive?

I am sending the laptop back to Dell - they sent me a replacement. This IS the replacement. Any warnings or re-clarification of your instructions? I'm not at all experienced at doing any of this. Thanks. You do understand that Windows7 is already installed? Why/How does it ask me to do a custom install? It said to press any key to start with CD/DVD. Did I not understand what boot with install disk means? Thanks.

You want to press a key when it asks you this so that it boots the DVD. When it finishes the boot cycle it will bring to to a screen to begin the installation. Once you get to the Installation portion it will bring up a screen on which type of install you want to do, select the custom install. During the custom prompts you will be asked where you want to install Windows and it will show you the partitions on the drive. Here is where you want to select the Advanced Drive Options on the right hand of the screen. This will give you more options that you can select on the left side of the screen. You want to delete all the partitions that are shown. After all partitons are deleted, cancel out fo the install by clciking the X in the top right hand corner. Then try booting with the DBAN and running it.

We aren't going to do a full install, we are just using the utilities on the disc to wipe out the exsiting partitions on the drive to see if they are whats causing the DBAN to fail.

Here is another Hard driver wiper (I have not used it). That doesn't seem as complicated as DBAN and has a free version. http://www.killdisk.com/
