Does DBAN work on Win7?
-

Does DBAN work on Win7? Somebody at Yahoo answers says no. I put in the disk, hit F12 to start from CD - and nothing - back to restore the system. Nuke is not an option. I made my 3rd disk and I am reasonably certain I converted the ISO file into disk. Why am I having such a hard time? Thanks.

Nancy I received this from Frank last Thanksgiving and I can say that this program is easy to use. Just follow the instructions below. Then download DBAN to your desktop and put a blank disc in your burner. FreeIsoBurner will basically translate the Iso file to the disc so that it becomes usable. This is a very easy to use program. (Below the images) Thank you Frank. Once this is done, you have to tell the computer that you are cleaning to boot from a CD in the bios. Not difficult. While booting the computer press the F2 key and the blue bios window appears. Using the "up and down" arrows, highlight "Boot Sequence" and press enter. Highlight the selection "Onboard CD-ROM Drive" by using the arrow keys again. Press the space bar to include this selection. Basically just following the instructions at the bottom of the screen move it to the #1 position. Save your changes and leave the bios screen. If you don't have a utility to burn an .iso or do't know how to do this, download FreeIsoBurner from this site http://www.freeisoburner.com/ No install needed just click the file you downloaded and FreeIsoBurner will startup. At top of window use the "open" button to browse to the location where your .iso is downloaded. Check the finalize box and make sure a blank CD or CD-RW is in the drive and click burn. When finished you will have a bootable Live CD of DBAN After creating the Live CD insert it into your new computers CD/DVD drive and boot to it. You may need to change your boot in BIOS to boot from your CD.

i put the 4th disk in, pressed F12 to start from disk and finally got the blue screen. dban info, etc. will wipe your computer, will be irretrievable (or whatever) i entered autonuke, pressed enter. it ran very quickly (seconds) and the choice to make a log popped up. just like the instructions say. i took out disk, i restarted the computer. WINDOWS 7 is on my laptop. should I have pressed F2 instead of boot options, start from cd? everything else said what they said it would say. running it again now. thanks for taking all those shots.

Your welcome. I'm glad you got into your Bios. This program may take all night to run and clean your drive. My post got a little out of order. Sorry about that.

clarify here. i restarted the computer. "no bootable devices - strike f1 to retry boot, f2 for setup utility, f5 to run onboard diagnostics." is this where i want to be? that's weird, if there's a lag time. I am back to load defaults (how you want to boot system). CD is checked, apply is depressed without me doing anything. this is not what i expected, but i think the drive is wiped? thanks for cutting into your show.---so am i.

Try the autonuke. I hope other members jump in with some help. I have to run right now. I'll check in later.

If your computer is set to boot from the CD_ROM, restart the computer with the disk in. Then make your selection.

you didn't say anything wrong Terry. I have no idea why it took seconds. how could the drive be wiped in 4 seconds? I don't know what I am looking at. Go do what you need to, thanks.

Dban works regardless of the data (read OS's) on a drive. What is on the CD if you open it to explore it while in Windows. Below image is what you should see. click image for larger picture Maybe you need an earlier version of DBAN the one I use is dban-1.0.7 https://sourceforge.net/projects/dban/files/ Download dban-1.0.7_386.iso and try making a CD from that.

Nancy, the image below is what you should see when you boot DBAN. Do not select autonuke press F3 instead. click images for larger picture On the next screen type quick in the space shown with the white arrow. The process WILL take at least a day or more. Let it run until DBAN says it's done.

I have 9 of the 11 files in V1.7. ABOUT BOOT DBAN.BZI ISOLINUX.BIN ISOLINUX.CFG QUICK RAID TROUBLE WARNING Something is going wrong when I download ISO file. I have both Roxio & CD Burner XP and used both. I have one blank CD and one with this on it. Two went in the trash yesterday so I can't even read them. I can follow instructions easily enough, so why is this not working? Thanks, Frank.

Okay. again downloaded version 1.7 iso. (there are choices of Zip and 3 other files. i assume this is the correct file, especially when using the highly touted Windows Disk Image Burner installed on Win7 - touted by MS, of course. Burned disk #5 with Windows Disk Image Maker & verified. inserted disk, pressed F3, entered "quick" "DBAN finished w/NON Fatal errors. this is usually caused by disks with bad sectors. send the log file with all support requests." you're going to tell me I have a bad batch of 50 Sony disks? keep burning?

Now remember you are burning from an ISO which is different from just burning files. The ISO contains a set of files which are extracted during the burning process. ISO files are actually images of complete CDs or DVDs compiled as one whole image file (*.iso). Use the Free ISO Burner http://www.freeisoburner.com/ as recommend above in post 2. Instructions for using are on that page.
Best Regards, Manny Carvalho MS-MVP Windows Your donation to this site is greatly appreciate

You are trying to NUKE a hard drive that you have had issues with, Correct? That may be what the program is trying to tell you. Its telling you the hard drive is bad not the CDs that its running from.
