Adobe GetPlus DL**** - Wednesday, March 03, 2010 3:48 PM ( #1 )
I googled it and found that it is something that Adobe tries to sneak on to your computer. I am pretty sure I never saw it or installed it. This morning, Secunia PSI is telling me that it is an insecure program. I checked all the places pointed out in the googled information and can't find it; it is not in Add and Remove Programs. Secunia shows that it is in a temp folder (Rike>AppData>Local>Temp>ICD1.tmp).
Can I just delete that folder?

Go ahead and delete it. From what i read it's low risk adware.  If you are using Abobe Reader, I would uninstall it and use Foxit Reader instead.
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/  It always seems that there is a security problem with Adobe products.

Just exactly what is it?  The software munged the title, and you don't mention the full title in your post.

Patti, from googling it, it seems to be a Download Manager (just for Adobe stuff, I guess). It is definitely not needed.

Chas, I already use Foxit, havent had Adobe Reader for years. It seems that this thing is coming down with Adobe Flash now, which I wish there was an alternative for! So, it is safe to delete temp folders, I take it!
Thanks for the help!

Oh yeah Adobe download mgr.  When I see it after updating Flash I uninstall the Download Mgr right away. There is a way to Download Flash without DL mgr. I just can't think of it at the moment

That's what I wanted to do - uninstall it. But the only place I could find it was in the temp file that Secunia found. I don't remember ever seeing it before. Here is an article on how to download Flash without getting the unneeded Download Manager (for Firefox, though it might be similar with IE,I don't know):    http://www.404techsupport...ut-getplus-in-firefox/

Isn't it just listed in Control Panel, Add/Remove in XP, Programs and Features in Vista and Win 7?

Wow, talk about intrusive, I just checked Flash in Firefox for updates and found that a new version had been released.
Going to the update site the first thing I noticed was a checkbox, checked by default, for an optional McAfee security scan.
Next attempting to D\L the update required an "unknown plugin" be installed manually.
This plugin is in the form of a file gp.xpi that has to be manually installed in Firefox's addons.
Once installed this plugin is displayed in Firefox's tools>Add-ons as Adobe DLM.
Returning to the Flash update page the update procedes without further trouble, you do have to make sure you again uncheck the McAfee security scan if you don't want a scan.

In IE8 the same thing happens except that Adobe DLM is an Active-x control removable from add\remove programs.

In the past you downloaded the standalone Flash update installer and simply ran the installer.
Not now apparently.

Patti, that's what had me confused - Secunia PSI told me that I had this Program and that it was insecure and I couldn't find it anywhere and didn't remember ever seeing it; so I clicked on the folder in Secunia PSI to show me where it was and it led me to a temp folder. The only thing I can think of is that it came down with Adobe Flash, but since I did not install it, it just sat there in this temp folder. Is that  a possible scenario?
I deleted the temp folder and Secunia is not complaining about GetPlus any longer.

Wow, it really looks like a big bother and they make you download so much unnecessary garbage! I hope and wish somebody would come up with an alternative Flash!

Update on this issue:

Below is link to an article about this issue as well as info to sidestep Adobe DLM.

http://www.ghacks.net/200...ash-without-adobe-dlm/

Points of interest here when new Flash (10,0,45.2) is installed in Firefox using the Adobe DLM add-on,
later removal of the add-on reverts the Flash version to the older version.
You need to use the method shown above if you want to update to the latest version of Flash in Firefox without the Adobe DLM.

Removing the Adobe DLM ActiveX control from add\remove programs has no such effect on IE 8 however.

A similar situation exists with updates for Google programs like Google Earth etc.
Updates require the Google Upgdate manager another intrusion.

BTW, this is in Win 7,  I haven't tried this in Linux, Adobe Flash has been notoriously Linux unfriendly
until recently so I expect the update to be interesting.

Thanks for the link, Frank.
I wonder if that is how the Adobe DLM ended up in one of my temp files? The procedure they are recommending looks very much like what I remember doing and that is why the DLM never showed up in either Add or Remove Programs or in the Firefox Extensions list. But there it was in my temp files! Isn't that disgusting?

The method outlined is how it used to be done.
If you updated Flash either because Firefox alerted you to an update or used Adobe Reader's update feature that is how you got the Adobe DLM.

If you are viewing a Flash video and right click it and choose "About Adobe Flashplayer 10" you will be taken to a page telling you the version installed as well as the latest version available.
There is a link on that page to the "player download center".
It is at this page (download center) that you see the questionable McAfee security scan option as well as a "Agree and Install" button.

In the past clicking this button downloaded the standalone installer for the update.

Now clicking it will require you install Adobe DLM.
In Firefox you are informed that a required plugin is missing, the Adobe DLM.
It needs to be installed before you can update Flash.

In IE8 you are required to install an ActiveX control to update Flash again Adobe DLM.

This is removable from add\remove programs.
