Firewall and AV

Previous post is broke. Again, installed MS Security Essentials in place of NOD32. Only difference I see is NOD32 is faster in updating and MSE is so slow that it's best to do manual updates. Is Windows firewall a poor substitue for Online Armor Premium? One notable difference for me is OA adds about 3 minutes to boot up time. Comments?

I deleted your other post. OA is a fine product that includes many more features than the built in Windows firewall. However, just as a firewall the built in one is fine. I don't find my boot time increased with OA but it depends on the machine and what you have installed.

OA is much more than a simple firewall, it includes a very comprehensive HIPS program which may account for some of the start up delay but still, 3 minutes sounds a bit much. OA has an excellent forum that might be able to help you. I don't notice much delay at all with OA, maybe 30 seconds at the most (I never clocked it so I'm guessing) but for all that extra protection, it's worth it to me. If all you want is a simple pure firewall without any extras, than the built in Windows firewall is just fine. Acadia

I've decided to return to using OA Premium 2008 instead of WinFW. Next a decision between using NOD32 or MSE. Thanks for your answers.

Smitty I've decided to return to using OA Premium 2008 instead of WinFW. Next a decision between using NOD32 or MSE. ..... ... OA good choice, but the native firewall ain't as bad as some limn it. I considered MSE, even installed it. It uses a lot more ram than NOD32. Install it and check ram usage with Task manager or Process Explorer from Sysinternals. If ram usage is not a problem to you, MSE is okay. Its detection is not as good as Eset's program.
