Color inkjet or B&W laser printer.... - Thursday, January 28, 2010 2:55 PM ( #1 )
Looking to buy one or both. My requirements:
1. Best I can buy for a good price (I tend to be a bargain hunter)
2. Don't want to get stuck with machine that requires ink that's
    outrageously priced.
Anyone here got a inkjet or laser printer fits the above (and they are happy with) please advise make/model number so I can look into it. Thanks.

While I don't like their computers I have always liked HP printers.

I tend to stay away from all-in-one printers as I prefer to have printer, scanner separate.

Sorry to say that you might have a bit of a hard time finding my printer as it is pretty old.  Been running it for years without issue.  HP 5550 Deskjet.  It has gone through XP, Vista and is now in use with Win 7.

I bought a refurbied Konica Color Laser Printer 4 years ago from Tiger Direct, one of the best purchases I ever made.  No longer have any inkjet printers.

Haven't used this one but looks like a good deal:

Prices have come down a lot since we had our Laser printers, my husband used to have a Brother B/W Laser Printer and I had an HP Colour Laser Printer. It's a few years ago now and I don't remember the model numbers. We were happy with them but at that time when it came to changing the toner and colours we just couldn't afford them so we went back to inkjet printers.

We always tend to buy Epson inkjet printers now, at present I have an Epson Stylus DX4400 All-in-one which I'm very happy with and my husband has an Epson Stylus D92, we tend to buy cheap ones now as we don't do enough printing to warrant paying a high price for one.

I used to overspend buying black and color cartridges for my Dell All in One until I bought the HP Laserjet P1006 6 mos ago.  It was on sale at Office Max for $89 (cost of 2 cartridges for the Dell) and I'm still using the starter laser cartridge that came with the printer. I don't miss color at all.  The replacement cartridge I bought at Amazon for $40 and I haven't even opened the box.  My Dell cartridges would dry out before I even used them up.  I'll never go back to Inkjet.  I use this with Vista and XP no problems.  HTH...katy

Hi Puddin. It wouldnt be bad to try places like www.tomshardware.com and magazine articles like PC Magazine, Computer World, Consumer Reports, and check out see what others say with feedback. Check comparisons. Magazines will to rather extensive testing of various products, however its power to the people. Color printers do well for B&W, if they have a black cartridge, expecially for text. I've been pondering on a color printer as well, but is not high on my list of importance. I tend to stay away from all-in-ones, simply put, if one part goes, the other parts could end up useless, or can become expensive on repairs. The only advantage in all-in ones is versitility and compact space.

For what is your main purpose? Are photos your highest on your list? Sometimes doing homework, and coming to Forums like this, can assist you in your purchasing.

Thanks for your reply. I too have zero interest in the combo junk...just a inkjet or laser printer is all I want. How is the ink useage and prices? Does it have separate cartridges for each color? How about print quality? Let me know, and if it sounds good, I'll see about tracking the model down on Ebay, Amazon, ect.

Hi mate
If you are looking for B&W printer, Brother 2170W can not be beaten. It is wireless, tested, working great, and for printing cost someone calculated somewhere it is about 2-3 cents per page. I still using starter toner with 1,300 pages and still running, yes I use toner saving and smallest resolution to print documents, but don't see much of a difference between higher and lower resolutions.
Price wise, you can find this thing for about $119 (at least I got mine for this last summer). There are some tricks to prolong complete toner usage could be found in the above link.
Ink jets are out of the game for B&W due to higher ink costs compare to laser toner, plus the heads (I changed 2 on old Canon printer) and quality.
For color, Canon Pixma (all in one) was my second choice, but not this time...

Just another 2 cents
My Main PC configuration: Dell XPS GEN3, WinXP Home SP2  3.4 Ghz HT (single with hyperthreading), 2 GB DDR2 533Mhz RAM (generic RAM), 3 HDDs - SATA1, EVGA 8800 GT Dual slot  in PCI 1.0, 2 DVD Rs: older - Philips 8701, newer - LG GSA-H54L.

Unfortunately it does not have separate color cartridges.  Has two cartridges, one black and another for all colors.  Has a third cartridge that replaces the black cartridge for doing higher quality photos.

Ink usage seems pretty decent to me but then I usually use draft mode.

Print quality is excellent.
